Facebook Legacy Contacts
Facebook allows you to assign a Legacy Contact to manage your profile after you pass away. Here's how:
- Go to Settings & Privacy → Settings.
- Click See more in Accounts Center.
- Click Account ownership and control
- Click Memorialization
- Click the specific facebook account you want to assign a legacy contact (if you have more than one)
- Choose a Legacy Contact and give them the rights to archive your data* or request deletion after death.

✅ What they can download:
According to Meta’s documentation, this includes:
Posts, photos, and videos shared on your timeline
Profile and contact info
Events attended
Your friends list
❌ What they cannot access: Even with archive rights, they cannot download: Your private messages Account login info Payment information Activity outside of Facebook (e.g., Instagram or WhatsApp) Content others posted to your timeline
Important Things to Know
- Your legacy contact can write a pinned post, update profile picture, and respond to friend requests.
- They cannot log into your account or read private messages.
- Any pages that the facebook profile has where the person is the sole admin, will be removed and groups will be paused
- Any pages that a memorialized but without a legacy contact will no longer be able to be modified
